How Do I Check My Oil?

How do I check my oil?

Just like the blood in your body, the oil in your engine is vitally important to keeping your vehicle running down smoothly down the road. Engine oil is specifically designed to minimize wear, help keep the engine cool, and lubricate and clean the internal components of your motor. Checking your oil is an extremely easy bit of maintenance that should be performed regularly, and the technicians of our Jeep service center around the Richmond area can quickly provide this service quickly and get you back on the road in no time.

Step 1

Begin with your vehicle on level ground so that you can you get an accurate reading of your oil level. Make sure you have a cool or warm engine (check your owner's manual for your OEM recommendation), so if your vehicle is fully heated up, park it and let it stand until it has cooled down a bit.

Step 2

Open up the hood of your vehicle and locate the "dipstick". Usually the end of the stick will have a noticeably colored pull handle. Remove the dipstick entirely, and wipe all the oil off of it. Re-insert the dipstick fully into the engine, and remove it again.

Step 3

Carefully inspect the level on the dipstick. The dipstick will either have two holes, two notches, or an engraved mesh area on the end of it. If the oil level is between those two points, then your oil level is safe. If it is above the higher mark, your oil level is too high and you will need to remove some oil from your vehicle. If the reading is below the lower marking, you are low on oil and will need to add some. You can take advantage of the Express Lane service at our Fredericksburg Dodge repair center, and we can quickly take care of your vehicle's oil needs if you have any concerns.

Always check with your owner's manual or local dealer when adding oil to make sure you are using the right grade of oil in your engine. When adding oil, only add a little a time. Overfilling your engine with oil can cause harm to the other components of your vehicle, such as the catalytic converter. It is more work to remove oil then add, so take your time when assessing your engine oil.
