Jeep Cherokee vs. Compass
It only makes sense that the company credited for inventing SUVs would sell slightly different SUVs, such as the Cherokee and the Compass. The question is – how do you know whether you want to drive down the I-95 each day in a Cherokee or a Compass? Well, taking a closer look at the key differences between the two options should help.
The biggest reason why you have trouble telling the 2018 Jeep Cherokee and Compass apart as you cruise down the I-95 across Fredericksburg, Virginia, is because they are both compact SUVs. If you get a close enough look, the Jeep Cherokee is actually the larger of the two SUVs. It’s 9 inches longer and more than 1.5 inches taller. Plus, it has a larger wheelbase.
Unfortunately, the theory that “bigger is better” doesn’t necessarily work when comparing these two SUVs. While the Cherokee is – indeed – bigger on the outside, it doesn’t translate to bigger on the inside. In fact, the Compass manages amazingly offers much more space on the inside.
It isn’t the size that allows you to tell the difference between the Cherokee and Compass, however. It’s the Cherokee’s distinctive accent lighting, curved grille, and lower license plate configuration.

The Compass tends to be the more attractive option once you take a look inside both models. The Compass offers more cargo space as well as more space for the passengers. This difference in interior space is enough of a reason for a lot of people to choose the Compass over the Cherokee. One interior detail unique to the Cherokee is the ability to slide the seats forward to add to the cargo space. This isn’t something you can do in the Compass, or you won’t have as much rear legroom. So, choosing Cherokee or Compass based on the interior means choosing whether cargo space or rear legroom is more important.
As far as the design and quality of the interior, you will have a tough time telling the two apart. The only key difference between the two is the wide front center console on the Cherokee. You’ll find all of the same buttons, switches, and features regardless of which model you are sitting in. However, you can upgrade to a larger touchscreen in the Cherokee.
Engine and Mechanics
Both the 2018 Compass and Cherokee come standard with a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine. It offers 171 pound-feet of torque and 184 horsepower. This is the only option for the Compass. However, the Cherokee has a more powerful option: a 3.2-liter V6 engine for 239 pound-feet and 271 horses. They both come with front-wheel drive, but you can opt for all-wheel drive, instead. So, if you want the more powerful engine, you’ll need to go with the Cherokee.
As you can imagine, the extreme similarities between the 2018 Jeep Compass and Cherokee make selecting which one you want to drive incredibly challenging. The only thing left for you to do is take a trip to Safford CDJR of Fredericksburg, Virginia, and take both a 2018 Jeep Cherokee and Compass for a test drive. Even if you understand the differences between the two, you need to see which one you feel more comfortable behind the wheel of.
