Removing the doors on your Jeep Wrangler

Removing the doors on your Jeep Wrangler

Removing the doors on your Jeep Wrangler is as easy as 1, 2, 3...

Materials Required (Based on 2016 JK Model)
  • Ratchet
  • T50 Torx Head drive

Step 1: Preparation

Fold your mirrors in and roll down all of your windows to avoid damage to the glass. Be sure that you are taking your doors off somewhere you can store them safely so they don't get scratched or dented. Keep in mind the doors can be heavy.

Step 2: Removing the door hinge bolts

Using your T50 Torx head drive, remove the door hinge bolts from the doors. There will be 2 bolts per door. Once you have removed these Torx head bolts, store them somewhere safe so you don't lose them or in your rear cargo area, there may be a placeholder for them.

Step 3: Removing the driver and passenger side door straps

After removing the door hinge bolts, open your driver's side door and locate the safety strap at the bottom of the door. If you have powered doors, follow the strap all the way under the dash to disconnect the wiring harness from the vehicle. Push down on the plastic tab of the connector and pull down to disconnect the wiring harness. Remove the strap from the hook and tuck the strap into your door cargo pocket. Be careful not to let the door swing open as it can damage your bodywork. This is why the safety strap is there. Repeat this process on the passenger's side door.

Step 4: Removing the doors

By opening the door and lifting upward, remove the doors from the hinge and place them somewhere safe so they don't get damaged. These doors can feel quite heavy, so be careful when handling them by yourself.

*Step 5: Removing rear passenger doors on 4-door (Unlimited) Wranglers

For 4-door Wranglers, slide the front seats all the way forward to make it easier when disconnecting the rear passenger doors. Open the rear passenger door and locate the door safety strap just as you did in the front. If you have powered doors, remove the plastic cover on the B-pillar where the wiring harness is connected to the vehicle. Push down on the tab of the connector and pull down to disconnect. Remove the safety strap from the hook and secure it in the door cargo pocket. Open and lift up on the door to remove it from the hinges. Store your doors somewhere safe so they don't get damaged. Now you're looking at a door-less Jeep!

Step 6: Installing the doors back on

Getting the doors back onto your Wrangler is as easy as rewinding the steps you took when removing the doors. Place the doors back onto the hinges and reconnect all of your wirings harnesses back into the vehicle and place the safety straps back onto the hooks. Secure the door hinge bolts using your T50 Torx head drive. Easy!
